The Hematology and Oncology Physician Assistant (PA) and/or Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an exciting opportunity to provide direct care and patient education as a member of a multidisciplinary team in a teaching environment.  Under the supervision of the attending physician and within the established practice guidelines, the PA/NP will perform a variety of duties in the evaluation, treatment plan and care, diagnosis and follow-up of assigned patients on the Hematology and Oncology service.  The PA/NP in conjunction with the supervising physician is responsible for admissions, coordination and symptom management of chemotherapy or biotherapy patients, history and physicals, obtaining patient consents, providing daily care including ordering chemotherapy, referring to other specialties, discharging, transferring and responding to patients and families.  The PA/NP is expected to develop knowledge of the solid tumor malignancies, of the disease processes, and of the treatment and management modalities across the cancer-care continuum.  As an intricate member of the team, the PA/NP must be able to successfully collaborate with other disciplines including but not limited to other internal or external medical or surgical specialties, social work, nursing, palliative care, psychiatry, pharmacy, research and nutrition.  The PA/NP will also become familiar with common complications experienced by oncology patients and gain expertise regarding appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions.
