Education Required:  High school Diploma

Experience Required: At least two years of work experience in a direct patient care capacity or in central materials services sterilizing equipment

LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:  Basic Life Support

 

JOB FUNCTIONS

As part of the Patient Care Services – Surgical Services team and under the direction of a Registered Nurse, a Certified RN Anesthetist and/or Anesthesiologist, the Anesthesia Technician:

 

  • Prepares the operating room for surgical procedures, as directed, by obtaining, arranging, and setting up supplies and equipment to be utilized by anesthesia during surgical procedures.  Ensures required supplies, medications, instruments and equipment are available and sterile for use in case. 
  • Opens sterile supplies according to aseptic technique.
  • Prepares sterile field
  • Dons appropriate surgical attire according to the organization’s policy. 
  • Minimizes preventable harm events and consistently executes the infection control protocols.
  • Incorporates the Culture of Safety tools in daily practice, adhering to quality and safety guidelines and communicating near-miss or potential risks.  Utilizes performance improvement methodologies

 

Assists with Procedures

 

  • Assists with procedures and safe medication practices under the supervision and delegation of the anesthesia department by:                                                                                                                                  - Positioning the patient and retracting tissue and other bodily parts as directed.                                                                                                                                                                                                                      - Drawing up and administering medications as directed by an anesthesiologist.                    

- Participating in procedures such as nerve blocks and endotracheal intubations.                                                            

-May assist the post-anesthesia care unit with patient care issues related to anesthesia.

 

Expedites Patient Flow

  • Assists anticipates, plans for and responds to the needs of the patient and perioperative team.
  • Removes used anesthesia equipment and accessories (such as breathing tubes, masks and bags) from Operating Room after surgery and discards used supplies based on environmental and infection control guidelines.
  • Utilizes high level disinfection and sterilization techniques properly. 
  • Appropriately follows the chain of command and adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Communicates effectively with the healthcare team utilizing established handoff and patient identification procedures.  Gives and accepts respectful feedback to enhance teamwork.
  • Functions effectively in inpatient crisis situations and utilizes emergency resources. 
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment to enhance patient satisfaction and a culture of safety.
  • Coordinates work schedule with departmental supervisor to provide coverage.
  • Moving patients and transferring patients to and from stretchers and beds. 

 

 

Maintains the Anesthesia equipment for all units (OR, ASC, L&D, ACU, Endoscopy and IR)

 

  • Makes basic repairs, calibrates, and makes adjustments and modifications on equipment, video, cables, hardware components as needed

Checks gas lines

    • Maintains department logs and records.
    • Coordinates with biomedical engineering vendor for more complex repairs.
    • Performs regular/basic preventative maintenance on equipment.
    • Performs daily and other periodic safety checks.
    • Maintains inventory roster of equipment
    • Assembles new equipment or contacts biomedical engineering vendors to do so.
    • Detects and reports faulty equipment, defective material, and unsafe and/or unusual conditions to the Nurse Manager
    • Recommends equipment replacement.

 

Together with the Nurse Manager and Materials Management participates in new equipment/supply trials and implementation in a cost-efficient manner.  This may include:

    • Meeting with vendors to learn of new equipment/materials options
    • Recommending trials by presenting to Nurse Manager and Materials Management leadership.
    • Meeting with physicians to encourage participation and openness to change.
    • Coordinating trial period, which involves intricate scheduling among several key players over the intended period of time.
    • Collecting feedback from the team participating in the trial.
    • Coordinating the implementation of the new equipment/materials including but not limited to:

 

Supplies Expeditor

  • Recommends par levels for Anesthesia equipment-related supplies, with a sensitivity to cost containment, avoiding waste, and recognizing limited space.
  • Reviews surgical schedule in advance and ensures availability of necessary equipment and supplies.
