About the Job

Position Summary:       Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, processes and routes specimens to the appropriate laboratory for analysis and is familiar with the patient and specimen requirements for these tests. The Laboratory Technician performs some clinical assays and the associated supporting work for use in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. He/she performs associated quality control and quality assurance procedures as required. The Laboratory Technician responds to telephone inquiries from laboratory personnel, physicians, or other interested parties and resolves a variety of routine problems.   Coverage includes rotating weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

Education/Experience: Education:  Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: 

• Analytic ability to perform laboratory testing, interprets findings, perform calculations, and calibrate and troubleshoot instruments used.
• Ability to identify and evaluate clinical testing problems and to affect corrective action procedures and modifications.
• Manual dexterity and acuity necessary to prepare specimens, screen specimens, prepare solutions, and operate instrumentation and a computer.
• Ability to concentrate for long periods of time, utilizes good judgment, work accurately under pressure and handle stress to meet deadlines.
• Interpersonal verbal and written English language skills sufficient to exchange information with physicians and other colleagues.
• Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.

Experience:  Prior laboratory experience preferred .
