About the Job

 

JOB SUMMARY:

Contributes to the Hospital’s mission by performing cardiac ultrasound testing procedures for physician review and interpretation. In the lead role, this position also oversees daily operations, troubleshooting issues to maximize the department’s efficiency and accuracy and develops and promotes collaborative and collegial relationships with Cardiology, physicians, and the patient care team and within Cardiology.  This clinical staff position will have an impact on improving patient and physician satisfaction by providing ensuring the shift provides the best possible experience for our patient as well as providing quality images for physician review.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Required:  Associates Degree from AMA approved school

 

Experience:

Required: Three years cardiac sonography in an acute care setting

Preferred: Five years in an acute care setting with some supervisory

 

Other Skills/Knowledge:

Required:

  • Basic computer skills
  • For safety and quality reasons, must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English with patients, visitors and fellow members of the hospital team

Preferred: Pediatric or neonatal experience preferred

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS

Required: Registered with the RDCS (AE) credential

JOB FUNCTIONS:

As part of the Cardiology team, the Lead Cardiac Sonographer functions in the dual capacity of:

 

Lead Sonographer:

 

  • Works collaboratively with the Cardiology Supervisor in the planning and implementing of operations and performance improvement initiatives for the laboratory section and the department as a whole. 
  • Builds and maintains a staffing plan in the scheduling system that is fair, efficient and fiscally prudent.
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise in the assigned area and fosters a climate of clinical and professional excellence.
  • Oversees shift operations, assigning functions to optimize efficiency, ensuring staff are operating within their job expectations. 
  • Precepts and mentors staff so to expand their knowledge and competence in cardiac ultrasound exams, operations and processes.
  • Troubleshoots operational issues and customer service calls and complaints.  Follows the proper chain of command to resolve concerns, addressing the short term issue and recommending and/or working towards long-term resolution and improvements with laboratory leadership team.
  • Provides performance feedback on staff directly to the staff member thus fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement and to the supervisor as appropriate.  Addresses patient and staff safety concerns promptly. Gives input into the performance evaluation process.
  • In the absence of the Supervisor, the Lead Sonographer will assume the supervisory role and make decisions that will impact patient care and departmental operations to insure continuity of patient care.
  • Works with department leadership to maintain and apply for re accreditation per ICAEL standards.
  • Remains current in Echocardiography technology utilized and assist other sonographers in training and education as needed in Echo Cart functions as well as Cardiology information systems related to the Echocardiography Lab.

 

Sonographer:

 

  • Performs inpatient and outpatient cardiac ultrasound exams according to physician orders either in the Cardiology department or b remotely bringing equipment to patient units.
  • Reviews inpatient chart prior to exam to gather pertinent symptoms and history of the patient.
  • Interviews the outpatient for symptoms and cardiac history.
  • Prepares patient for procedure by assisting/placing patient in proper imaging position and explaining exam.
  • Acquires cardiac ultrasound images.
  • Integrates images into automated system and compiles a preliminary report for Cardiologist.
  • Processes patient billing by assigning the proper CPT codes and inputs data into patient billing system.
  • Cleans all testing equipment after each exam.
