The CNL provides care indirectly to patients and in collaboration with other health care team members. The CNL works productively and effectively within a complex environment, handling multiple/changing priorities and dealing with demands associated with a  tertiary patient care environment such as, varying patient needs and staffing resources. 


Essential Duties & Responsibilities: including but not limited to:


I. Clinical Practice and Leadership: In collaboration with the Nurse Manager (NM), the CNL delegates and manages the clinical nursing team resources and serves as a leader and partner in the interdisciplinary health care team. Coordinates the delivery of care of multiple disciplines actively involved in the patient’s care. Serves as an advocate for the professional and the interdisciplinary health care team.

Serves as a change agent to design and evaluate care in order to improve patient outcomes and the patient experience 

Serves as a resource to charge nurse in order to match varying patient need and staffing resources including the competence level and experience of nursing staff

Develops, implements, and assures compliance with Nursing Practice Standards.

Encourages staff participation on Shared Governance Councils, nursing committees, and organization committees.

Maintains extensive knowledge of current professional/clinical issues and uses evidence-based resources to deliver nursing care to specific patient populations.





In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, promotes excellence in nursing practice and the nursing process by  serving as a clinical resource to nursing staff and the interdisciplinary team

Guides and instructs staff in their role as direct caregivers

Evaluates nursing practice to provide clinical learning opportunities for staff

Assists staff to incorporate evidence-based knowledge into their daily nursing practice

Mentors staff in cultivating a caring-healing-protective environment


II. Staff Development: In collaboration with the Clinical Nurse Specialist and/or Clinical Educator, uses appropriate teaching principles and strategies as well as current information, materials, and technologies to teach nursing staff.  Provides opportunities for less experienced nursing staff to observe experts in clinical practice and fosters mentoring relationship in the patient care environment. Provides formal and informal educational opportunities on the unit to improve clinical skills of all staff based upon education needs assessment of nursing team members. 

Develops and implements an annual educational plan for licensed and unlicensed nursing staff, based upon patient population, nursing-sensitive indicators and other data sources such as National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI), Press Ganey, Patient Experience and Core Measures.

Plans and implements the orientation of all new colleagues and maintaining the educational files of all colleagues.

In collaboration with Central Education, develops education programs designed to assist the staff nurse in the progression from novice to expert.

In collaboration with the Nurse Manager and central education, plans, implements and evaluates the annual competency program (including the Skills Fair) for all colleagues

Assures compliance of all colleagues with Mandatory Educational programs, i.e. BLS, ACLS, PALS (if applicable)

In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, assures compliance with regulatory requirements and assures the unit is in a continuous state of readiness for a regulatory survey, i.e. Joint Commission, DPH

Collaborates with the Nurse Manager to provide opportunities for staff to: 

Participate in Nursing Shared Governance programs

Participate in EBP/nursing research or performance improvement activities

Set unit targets for certification

Participate in professional organizations

In collaboration with the NM, provides or oversees the education of the patient and family to understand illness and self-care concepts

III. SYSTEM COORDINATION: Able to participate in systems review using LEAN and other tools to improve quality of patient care delivery and at the individual level to critically evaluate and anticipate risks to patient safety with the aim of preventing medical error; incorporates standards from regulatory agencies related to patient safety including JC, OSHA, CMS, and others into daily care to improve care outcomes within the micro system of care. 

In collaboration with the Nurse Manager:

Links organization/departmental goals and strategic plan to organization’s mission and goals.

Works collaboratively to solve problems, improve processes, and integrate services within the department and with other departments.

Supports new ideas and changes within the department by actively participating and contributing.

Demonstrates flexibility in meeting demands of the department.

Organizes and prioritizes work to meet deadlines.

Develops effective communication methods to keep staff and others informed about activities of the organization and department.

Facilitates patient flow. 

Assists staff to identify and solve system-based barriers


IV. QUALITY IMPROVEMENT: In collaboration with the NM synthesizes data, information and knowledge to evaluate and achieve optimal client outcomes; Collects data on patient outcomes on the unit i.e. pressure ulcers, medication errors, falls, etc. Maintains population/ unit level metrics and dashboards; Uses metrics with work team to identify areas of opportunity and facilitates process and patient outcome improvements.

Monitors compliance to regulatory criteria and standards of care.

Reviews outcome measures and works collaboratively with staff, interdisciplinary and leadership teams to improve staff and patient outcomes. Ie: National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) and Engagement survey.

Participates in the unit-based practice council by assisting staff to identify and solve practice or system barriers

Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and nursing services, analyzing appropriate internal and external data and information to identify opportunities in collaboration with stakeholders for improving services and patient outcomes.




V. RESOURCE MANAGEMENT:  Under the direction of the Nurse Manager:

Human Resource Management

Works collaboratively with the Nurse Manager to recruit, hire and retain qualified personnel.

Participates in the performance appraisal process as assigned.

In collaboration with the leadership team, assures appropriate orientation, competence assessment, in-service training and continuing education for all staff.

Fosters staff development by assisting them to identify goals and appropriate opportunities for learning.

Encourages creativity and celebrates staff accomplishments.

Promotes an environment that is sensitive to the diverse needs of the patients and employees.

In conjunction with the Nurse Manager, coaches and supports staff by removing barriers and addressing issues.

Actively participates in staff meetings.

Communicates staffing concerns to Nurse Manager and/or Associate Chief.

Delegates work appropriately and provides direction and guidance to nursing and support staff.

Coordinates the scheduling and staffing of the unit.

Fiscal Resource Management

Develops and implements cost effective staffing patterns.

Uses resources effectively to provide high quality cost effective services.

Promotes staff awareness of hospital cost and assists the Nurse Manager with maintenance of the unit budget.

Maintains ANSOS daily to ensure accurate staffing patterns for payroll purposes.

Manages expenses and identifies areas of potential cost savings.


 VI. Clinical Data and Informatics: Uses knowledge at the point of care to improve health care outcomes and to obtain evidence based practices and the latest research to provide current best practice information to care providers on the unit

Develops and utilizes tools available to effectively evaluate, summarize and communicates patient’s progress toward outcomes to members of the healthcare team and patient and family. 

Ensures effective communication and flow of information to all appropriate care providers by obtaining appropriate comprehensive patient story and transmitting that effectively to care providers.

Minimum Qualifications:

Maintains extensive clinical knowledge of the patient population and possesses current clinical and leadership skills as defined by nursing specialty organizations and in compliance with all regulations and standards of regulatory and accrediting bodies. 


Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing is required.  Masters of Science, Nursing or equivalent advanced degree in health related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience in order to have full understanding of Nursing leadership and Education functions is preferred. 

Licensure, Certification, Registration:  

Current licensure to practice professional nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Life Support Certification: BLS

understanding of email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation. Competency in the use of spreadsheets, databases, and
functions of the job.
Experience: Progressive experience in health care including involvement in direct patient care, staff education, and problem solving of
unit or organizational issues. 5 years current, relevant nursing experience is required. An additional 1-3 years of training and
education experience is required, preferrably in a healthcare setting.
