The Assistant Vice President (AVP) is responsible for direction and execution of Beth Israel Lahey Health’s diversity, equity and inclusion strategies to achieve its vision to “transform care delivery by dismantling barriers to equitable health outcomes and become the premier health system to attract, retain and develop diverse talent."
As a direct report of the Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer (CDEIO), the AVP works independently and in close partnership with physician and staff leadership, the DEI council, local DEI champions across the system to affect measurable DEI change across people, patients and community.
The AVP plays a leadership role in establishing strategic direction and integration across a large and highly complex academic medical institution, responsible for successful prioritization, design and execution of system improvements and programs that achieve BILH’s DEI goals. The role requires an extraordinary ability to partner with other leaders, entities, departments and teams, leading through influence to accomplish a broad array of cultural advancements that will promote and build a climate of diversity, equity and inclusion.
The AVP has direct management oversight for the DEI Office staff and provides implementation support to more than 20 DEI leaders across the system.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:
Oversight, design and implementation of strategic DEI initiatives across the BILH system, comprising 36,000 employees, 13 hospitals, multiple business units.
Lead the development of a “DEI Diagnostic Toolkit” to define degrees of DEI maturity across workforce, patient care and community investments. The toolkit identifies best practices, measures DEI progress by hospital, business unit and major system functions, to develop multi-year action plans.
Works with BILH executive team and board of trustees to establish DEI system goals and develops detailed DEI scorecard to measure progress against annual targets and long-term vision.
In close collaboration with human resources and local entities, designs and implements strategies to recruit, retain and develop talent across staff, leadership, faculty, trainees, and clinicians – efforts include, but are not limited to:
Diverse talent pipeline development through internal policies, system infrastructure and partnerships with minority professional organizations and community organizations.
Retention strategies to increase employee engagement and establish a culture of belonging through programs and policies focused on achieving equity of opportunity to thrive at BILH.
Establishes system-wide approach to and leads the implementation of colleague resource groups (CRGs)/ diversity councils.
Training and development to provide pathways for upward mobility for diverse talent at BILH, including mentoring programs, workforce development for entry-level staff, pathways to leadership for high potential diverse talent, etc.
Deployment of DEI learning pathways to address bias and increase cultural sensitivity across all staff.
Works in close partnership with the vice president of health equity and the director of health equity research, to align DEI priorities and goals with health equity and social determinants of health strategies for improving the outcomes and experience for diverse patients and communities.
Works in close collaboration with the Chief Academic Officer to support efforts to hire, train, and promote diverse research teams, educators, and investigators who produce innovative research to serve our diverse patient population and create medical educational programs to support this mission.
Works in close partnership with BILH Supply Chain to Increase spend with minority/women-owned business enterprise.
Plays a leadership role in developing and implementing BILH community investment strategies to address wealth inequality in marginalized communities across our service area.
Works in close collaboration with the vice president of community benefits and community relations to meet community health needs, through focused investments in disaffected communities.
Works in close collaboration with the vice president of supply chain to establish a supplier inclusion program, policies and systems infrastructure.
Plays a role as external DEI leader, collaborating with multicultural organizations, health centers, key influencers and DEI leaders.
Works in close collaboration with marketing and communications department to develop DEI communication strategy, including but not limited to:
BILH DEI webpage and social media strategy.
Annual plan for proactive communications and external community presence, pertaining to DEI, including observances pertinent to multiculturalism, LGBTQ+, women, people with disabilities and veterans.
Establishes a framework for rapid response to social and racial justice issues, including internal and external statements, in alignment with BILH’s values.
Supports development of BILH multicultural marketing strategies to capture a larger share of the rapidly-growing diverse demographic segments, across our service area.
Education: Bachelors, advanced degree preferred
Licensure, Certification & Registration: n/a
A minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience in DEI and/or organizational development
Experience working in large, highly complex organizations, preferably provider systems
Experience leading large transformation initiatives, with strong program management and consulting expertise
Experience in change management, data analysis, organizational leadership/development
Demonstrated ability to translate DEI into business results, in alignment with financial/ P&L objectives
