About the Job

GENERAL SUMMARY:  Provides direction and coordination for all student volunteers, High school as well as college.  Recruits, schedules, trains and supervises students.  Acts as a liaison with the area schools and youth programs regarding community service.  Acts as a liaison with Human Resources and Staff Development regarding health care career development.  Supervises the Weekend Coordinators. 

 

PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  1. Exemplifies Winchester Hospital’s values and Service Excellence standards.  Commits to making every encounter with our patients, patients’ family, co-workers, physicians and other customers the best that it can be.

 

  1. Complies with all Hospital policies and the Code of Business Conduct.  Takes responsibility for own safety as well as the safety of patients, patients’ family, co-workers, physicians and other customers.

 

  1. Recruits and interviews all new prospective student volunteers.

 

  1. Places, orients, coaches, trains, and evaluates student volunteers.

 

  1. Prepares and maintains a schedule for each service to meet the needs of the hospital.  Works with the Weekend Coordinator to ensure weekend coverage. 

 

  1. Conducts group orientations in the spring and fall for new volunteers and annual mandatory training reviews for returning students.

 

  1. Trains or arranges for training for all student volunteers and reviews transportation quizzes. 

 

  1. Plans and implements appropriate recognition events including awarding service pins and participating in community service events. 

 

  1. Supervises messengers while on duty. 

 

  1. Work with Human Resources and Staff Development to educate students about careers in Health Care.  Also works with area high schools, especially, guidance counselors, to promote health care careers. 

 

  1. Reviews and develops printed materials which may include a newsletter. 

 

  1. Supports general activities of the volunteer department and hospital.

 

  1. Supervises the Weekend Coordinators. 

 

  1. Participates in the following:
  1. Mandatory training requirements as per hospital/unit policies
  2. Continuing education/in services to enhance knowledge
  3. Staff meetings
  4. Performance improvement initiatives
  5. Orientation of new staff, students and/or volunteers.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  1. Bachelors Degree in Behavioral Sciences, Education, Administration, Communications or related field required. 
  2. Administrative or supervisory experience in a health care facility or community agency.
  3. Requires good interpersonal skills to work with people of diverse backgrounds, skills and abilities, as well as teenagers.
  4. Requires written and verbal communication skills.
  5. Requires knowledge of State and Federal laws regarding youth.
  6. Computer skills with ability to learn Meditech and Volunteer Works.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND VISUAL REQUIREMENTS:    

 

      1.  Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

      2.  Ability to use the computer.

      3.  Ability to proofread documents and check for accuracy.

      4.  Ability to push wheelchairs, stretchers, and carts.

      5.  Ability to lift objects weighing approximately 10-15 pounds. 

 

OSHA EXPOSURE:   Job does involve possible exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:  

 

1.   Reports to Director, Volunteer Services.

2.   Responsible for supervising the work of others.
