About the Job

Clinic Hours: Monday through Friday 8:00am-5:00pm

Position Hours: Flexible

Position Summary: Under the general supervision of the Practice Coordinator and Medical Director evaluates, educates and counsels ambulatory patients in nutrition principles, medical nutritiontherapy and food selection, adapting dietary recommendations to the individual's age, lifestyle, individual preferences and medical requirements.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:


  1. Collects laboratory and other technical data, as well as anthropometric measurements and physician’s orders from the medical record.


  • Interviews patients and significant others to assess individualized eating style, food preferences, knowledge level and motivation for change. Identifies educational needs based on learning strengths and/or deficits.


  • Develops patient nutrition care plans addressed to the unique age, background and needs of each patient. Mutually establishes reasonable and achievable goals with patients.


  • Evaluates appropriateness of dietary orders and of expectations of patients and/or significant others.


  • Records a summary of the assessment, nutrition care plan and implementation in the medical record.


  • Counsels and educates patients through an interactive process, utilizing visual aides, verbal education, and printed and handwritten literature based on each patient's age and comprehension levels.


  • Educates patients about potential food/drug interactions with respect to insulin and diabetic oral agents, Coumadin, MAO inhibitors and tetracycline.


  • Reviews patients’ progress based on established goals and re-negotiates goals with patients at follow-up visits, altering the nutrition care plan and expectations as necessary. Attends team meetings to assess a patient’s progress


  • Requests added laboratory or other information from physicians, as needed.


  • Incorporates recent medical developments and knowledge of medical nutrition therapy and educational theory.


  • Communicates with HMOs for approval of follow-up appointments as deemed necessary for optimal patient care.


  • Maintains accurate daily and monthly productivity census


  • Implements group classes as needed (ex: obesity, cardiology rehab, diabetes, etc.)


  • Incorporates Winchester Hospital Promise Standards, Mission Statement and Goals into daily activities


  • Complies with all Winchester Hospital Policies.


  • Complies with behavioral expectations of the department and Winchester Hospital.


  • Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.


  • Demonstrates an understanding of the job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment.


  • Demonstrates a commitment toward meeting and exceeding the needs of our customers and consistently adheres to Customer Service standards.


  • Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.


  • Participates in and successfully completes Mandatory Education.


  • Performs all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.



Minimum Qualifications:


Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition Science or Nutrition Education or equivalent education and experience. Master’s Degree preferred.


Licensure, Certification, Registration: Must be a Registered Dietition with the Commission on Dietetic Registration and a Licensed Dietition in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts


Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Demonstrates the ability to be thoroughly trained to meet the requirements of this job description.


Experience: Minimum three (3) years of related experience in an appropriate clinical setting.
