About the Job

Position Summary: 

Beverly Hospital (BH), located in Beverly Massachusetts is part of the Beth Israel Lahey Health System. Beverly Hospital is a community hospital and consists of 10 operating rooms at the main campus and 4 operating rooms at the Lahey Outpatient Surgery Center located in Danvers, MA. BH provides a wide range of specialties including; orthopedics, GYN, general, vascular, spine, pediatrics, cysto, and ENT. The Operating Room Technician works as an integral part of the healthcare team, responsible for maintaining a safe environment in which quality patient care is delivered. The technician will work in conjunction with Anesthesiology, Nursing, and Surgery and provide necessary support in the Operating Room. This support includes, but not limited to, room setup and turnover, patient transport, specimen transport, stocking, patient positioning, and limb support during surgical prep. Additionally, he/she will assist in the OR with the intubation and extubation process and may be asked to participate in the evaluation of new anesthesia products, equipment and/or supplies. Prioritization of patient care tasks at hand and communication with health care team members is an important factor in performing the duties of this role. Other duties include the handling of infectious waste, sharps, and maintaining order and cleanliness in the restricted areas.

Responsibilities

  1. Cleans and maintains all anesthesia & operating room equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  2. Demonstrates proper use of equipment and supplies according to established procedures.
  3. Collaborate with materials management to ensure adequate and appropriate anesthesia and operating room supplies are available at all times.
  4. Responsible for assisting nursing staff in the rooms as needed and directed (i.e. turning, moving anesthetized patients, holding of extremities for surgical prep, gathering of equipment, etc.).
  5. Identifies a situation, opportunity, problem, or issue; assesses it from a variety of perspectives, considers several alternatives; chooses appropriate course of action when presented with non-routine situations.
  6. Provides timely assistance to the anesthesia provider and surgical team through continuous monitoring of OR room operations and needs.
  7. Checks status of stretchers to assure they are ready and available when needed for patient transport.
  8. Identifies and responds appropriately to needs of patients and others.
  9. Communicates pertinent information to appropriate persons in a timely manner.
  10. Adheres to hospital policies/procedures relative to vendors, evaluation of equipment, supplies, etc.
  11. Cleans, restock, changes filters and reassembles anesthesia equipment, checking all equipment and alarms for proper functioning between all cases daily.
  12. Stocks anesthesia carts and supplies in all operating rooms, labor and delivery ORs, Cardiovascular Center, and endoscopy units on a daily basis.
  13. Provides general assistance to the anesthesia and/or nursing staff as needed.
  14. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with other members of the health care team.
  15. Checks status of oxygen tanks on stretchers to assure O2 is always available for patient transport.
  16. Maintains inventory of medical gases for patient care, i.e. oxygen, laser mixture, nitrogen, compressed air.
  17. Delivery of specimens and blood products to the Laboratory or Radiology, as directed by nursing personnel.
  18. Performs between-case cleaning in order to minimize turnaround between surgical procedures which includes cleaning Operating Room equipment at end of surgical procedures, including surgical table, mayo stands, ring stands, instrument tables, kick buckets and IV poles, according to established infection control policies and procedures, i.e. Isolation/Precautions.
  19. Seeks guidance as necessary for performance of duties.

Qualifications

Education:   High school diploma or equivalent education

Licensure, Certification, Registration: BLS Required, ASATT certification preferred and/or working towards completion of Anesthesia Technology program.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Neat and clean in appearance. Able to communicate effectively; verbal and non-verbal communcation is skills important. Willingness to initiate communication with patients and families. Ability to work in a fast paced environment. Must be self-directed and work well independently and with others. Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology preferred.

Experience:    Experience working in a hospital setting preferred. Previous Anesthesia Technician training or similar training preferred.
