About the Job

JOB SUMMARY:  Contributes to the Hospital’s mission by serving the dual role of an OR Registered Nurse and Service Line Specialist.  This professional licensed position will have an impact on the OR’s operations by keeping current with efficient and clinically effective equipment and materials available for the service line and ensuring smooth operations of the service line by preempting and training and ensuring appropriate supplies and equipment are available as needed.  This position will also have a dramatic impact on physician satisfaction by monitoring and communicating the physician preferences for service line procedures. 





·        Hired prior to 10/1/13:  Graduate of a state approved and/or accredited RN program.

·        Hired on or after 10/1/13:  Bachelors’ degree in Nursing (BSN) or obtain BSN within 5 years of hire

 Preferred: BSN upon hire



Required: At least 18 months of previous work experience as a perioperative RN


Other Skills/Knowledge:


·        Basic computer skills

·        Demonstrated ability to function in Charge, preceptor and/or project roles

·        Knowledge of hospital practices and safety standards.

·        Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing

·        Working knowledge of EMR and other computer applications required

·        For safety and quality reasons, must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English with patients, visitors and fellow members of the hospital team




Required: Current license to practice professional nursing from MA Board of Registration

Preferred: Certification in clinical specialty            


LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:  Basic Life Support certification


POPULATION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:  Infant, Children, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric



Professional Commitment Requirements:  Keep abreast of developments in the field and/or licensure through continuing education, participation in professional organizations or a combination of both.

On-call:  Participates in on-call rotation, based on department needs.

Schedule requirements:  Subject to change based upon needs of the business/department.

Travel requirements:   May be asked to cover other surgical units.

As part of the patient care team, this position serves the dual role of:

Registered Nurse:

  • Utilizes the nursing process and evidenced-based practices to provide quality and safe patient care by identifying the specific needs of the patient, developing the nursing plan of care with the patient to answer these needs, then implementing and evaluating the effects of that plan.

  • Establishes a therapeutic relationship with the patient, the patient's family and significant others by involving them in each step of the process and accommodating factors that may influence the provision of care.

·        Utilizes critical thinking skills to coordinate and direct the healthcare team in the implementation of the patient’s plan of care to ensure the best possible outcomes and patient/family experience.

·        Circulates and/or scrubs surgical procedures as described in the AORN guidelines.

·        Demonstrates purposeful rounding in the delivery of patient care. 

·        Implements nursing interventions and treatments and administers medications.

·        Plans care to ensure the patient’s physical, emotional, cultural, and spiritual needs are met.

·        Performs all required documentation accurately, legibly and timely.

·        Appropriately follows the chain of command and adheres to hospital policies and procedures.

·        Educates and informs patients and family members throughout the patients’ experience from admission through discharge.

·        Communicates effectively with the healthcare team utilizing established handoff procedures.  

·        Gives and accepts respectful feedback to enhance teamwork.

·        Minimizes preventable harm events and consistently executes the infection control protocols.  Incorporates the Culture of Safety tools in daily practice, adhering to quality and safety guidelines and communicating near-miss or potential risks.

·        Coordinates work schedule with departmental supervisor to provide coverage and maintain safe staffing levels.

·        Maintains a clean and safe work environment to enhance patient satisfaction and a culture of safety.

·        Responds to supply/equipment issues in a timely manner to ensure availability of equipment and to maximize its useful life.

·        Adheres to the Magnet standards of professional development and clinical practice.

·        Functions effectively in patient crisis situations and utilizes emergency resources. 

·        Maximizes patient throughput to minimize wait time.

  • Upon completion of required training and competencies, may assume charge role, at the discretion of the nurse manager.


Service Line Specialist

            This role has four components:


  1. Service Line Resource:

·        Acts as a resource in the service to provide ongoing support incorporating evidence based practice.

·        Collaborates with the Nurse Manager, Lead Clinical Nurse, Materials Management, Central Materials Services and vendors to provide education and set up in-services for staff relating to area of specialty.

·        Provides and/or coordinates in-service education on new equipment, procedures, or processes.

·        Precepts and educates orientation of new staff to the specialty.

·        Updates key stakeholders regularly regarding changes in specialty procedures.  Key stakeholders include but are not limited to:  Nurse Manager, Lead clinical nurse, clinical nurse specialist, Materials Management staff, biomedical staff, sales representatives/vendors, surgical booking staff, surgeons, and surgeon’s office staff.

·        Assist with assigning of staff to cases in the specialty to achieve continued competence in all specialties.

·        Maintains advanced competence to scrub and circulate in all specialties.


  1. Equipment/Materials Trial Facilitator

·        Coordinates new equipment/supply trials and implementation in a cost efficient manner.

·        Facilitates the new equipment/materials process by:

o   Meeting with vendors to learn of new equipment/materials options

o   Recommending trials by presenting to Surgical Services and Materials Management leadership.

o   Meeting with physicians to encourage participation and openness to change.

o   Coordinating trial period, which involves intricate scheduling among several key players over the intended period of time.

o   Collecting feedback from the team participating in the trial.

o   Collaborating with team to address roadblocks and encourage standardization.

o   Presenting with recommendations.

o   Coordinating the implementation of the new equipment/materials including but not limited to:

·        Training staff and providers on the new equipment/materials or arranges training by other sources. 

·        Writing and distributing procedures

·        Collaborating with physicians to encourage adoption/change with the goal of standardization and best practices.

  1. Service Line Equipment/Supplies Expeditor

·        Recommends par levels for Service Line related supplies, with a sensitivity to cost containment, avoiding waste and recognizing limited space.

·        Reviews surgical schedule in advance and ensures availability of necessary equipment and supplies.

·        Communicates changes in surgical schedule and equipment availability to surgeons and their office staff.

·        Communicates changes to staff relating to inventory and supplies relating to service.

·        Contributes to development of capital and operational budgets of the operating room, in collaboration with the Nurse Manager as necessary.


  1. Physician Preference Card Caretaker

·        Creates and updates accurate and timely of physician’s preference cards.  Communicates non-standards request to the Nurse Manager. 

·        Encourages physicians to implement standardization and best practices.

·        Communicates changes timely to all stakeholders impacted by changes to the physician’s preference cards.


Nurses are responsible to meet all applicable competencies for functions they perform.
