About the Job

Position Summary:  Supports the mission of the department by ensuing that the right patients receive the right medication in a safe and timely manner. Along with performing pharmacist duties during the assigned shift, the lead pharmacist provides daily oversight of pharmacy operations in identified area. Clinically reviews medication orders received from prescribers to ensure that the medication, as ordered, is safe to administer to the patient.  If not, intervenes with the prescriber on behalf of the patient.  Appropriately enters order into the Pharmacy Information System. Oversees and provides direction to pharmacy technician, interns, and inpatient pharmacists to ensure that the daily needs of our patients are being met.  Provides drug information to medical staff and patients upon request or when need is apparent.  Works directly with the Inpatient operations manager and clinical coordinator to develop and implement policies and procedures consistent with the mission of the department.



Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:


  1. Serves as the lead pharmacist in the area of coverage (i.e. OR, chemotherapy infusion pharmacy) organizing the daily operations and activities of staff.
  2. Under the supervision of the manager, pharmacy operations, assist with addressing daily workflow and process issues to expedite optimal deliver of pharmaceutical care to patients.
  3. Performs pharmacists duties (order entry/verification, provide drug information etc.) daily during scheduled shift.
  4. Clinically reviews all medication orders to ensure that medications entered into the patient’s profiles are safe for administration.  Assessment includes, appropriate drug selection, medication allergy, dose, route of administration, diagnosis, relevant laboratory results, therapeutic duplication, drug interactions and age of patient.
  1.  Intervenes with appropriate health care professional when necessary, and documents clinical interventions consistent with departmental policy.
  1. Appropriately enters reviewed orders into the Pharmacy Information system with attention being paid to how this medication will be administered by the nurse
  1. Oversees and provides direction to pharmacy technician and interns to ensure that the daily needs of our patients are being met.  Educate technician and interns as to safe medication practices.
  1. Provides drug information to medical staff and patients upon request or when need is apparent.  Documents request into the intervention database in accordance with departmental policy
  1. Responsible for day-to-day oversight of drug distribution, including all controlled substances, IV medications, extemporaneously compounded medications, repackaged medications and investigational drugs.
  1. Responsible for understanding and utilizing all technology to accomplish the above.
  1. Serves as a liaison between pharmacy department and any health care provider
  1. Pharmacists are responsible for their own professional development including, meeting all requirements for continuing and education, keeping abreast of current professional literature, both from a clinical and medication safety perspective.
  1. Takes a lead role in continuous performance improvement activities of the department, including providing suggestions on how to improve day-to-day operations
  1. Ensures assigned projects are completed in an efficient and timely manner
  2. Assists in training of new department employees.
  3. Assists the operations manager with the investigation of medication errors in area of coverage,
  4. Under the supervision of the manager, pharmacy operations, assists the inpatient supervisor and clinical manager/coordinator with the implementation of new initiatives.
  1. Demonstrates competency in all practice areas in which pharmacist duties are performed.  Has completed all required departmental competency requirements.
  1. Assists with development and implementation of policies and procedures consistent with the mission of the department.


  1. Incorporates Lahey Clinic Guiding Principles , Mission Statement and Goals  into daily activities. 
  1. Strictly adheres to Lahey Clinic Confidentiality policy.
  1. Complies with all Lahey Clinic Policies.

Minimum Qualifications:


Education:  Must be a graduate of an accredited college of pharmacy


Licensure, Certification, Registration:  Must possess a valid MA pharmacist license.


Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:  Requires a working knowledge of all basic aspect of health system pharmacy (including drug therapeutics).


Experience:     Previous hospital pharmacy experience.
