About the Job

Position Summary:  Under the general supervision of the Assistant Nurse Manager,  and Mohs surgeons using established policies and procedures, performs a variety of tasks associated with the preparation of surgical, and biopsy, specimens for study.  Maintains QC and other records in accordance with organizational and regulatory guidelines.

About the Job: 

Position Summary: Prepares surgical specimens for evaluation, as an essential part of the Mohs micrographic surgery process for patients with skin cancer. Maintains laboratory quality control and other records in accordance with organizational and regulatory guidelines. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to: 

  1. Produce high quality frozen tissue sections that meet the high Department standards.

  2. Perform all double-checks and quality control actions reliably, to ensure patient safety. Address any discrepancies appropriately by immediately informing the Mohs surgeon and collaborating to resolve problems. 

  3. Maintain an orderly, hygienic, and functional work area with proper workspace cleaning, safe handling of material and waste according to departmental policies and procedures, and attentive equipment maintenance. 

  4. Assist the lead histotechnician with CAP and JCAHO readiness procedures. 

  5. Maintain strict adherence to the Lahey Clinic confidentiality policy and all other Lahey Clinic Policies.

  6. Contribute to the Dermatology team with commitment to professional and departmental growth. Provide and receive feedback in pursuit of slide preparation mastery, driven by shared departmental commitment to safety and quality. Minimum Qualifications

Education: As per CAP and (ASCP) HT certification guidelines, must meet at least ONE of the following criteria:

  1. 24 semester hours of science courses (at least 6 in biology, 6 in chemistry, and 12 in any combination of biology or chemistry or medical laboratory technology), out of at least 60 hours at an accredited institution, OR

  2. 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, out of at least 60 hours at an accredited institution, OR

  3. An associates degree in laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.

Licensure, Certification, Registration: HT ASCP registration preferred but not required.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

Preferred but not required at initiation: 

  • Ability to conduct routine and special stain preparation, quality assurance, and equipment maintenance

  • Knowledge of applicable CAP, JCAHO and other regulatory requirements, and the ability to meet them

  • At least basic ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel 

Required: Ability to collaborate, adapt, learn quickly, incorporate honest feedback, and problem-solve, for the benefit of patients and the surgical team.

Experience: Preferred but not required-- one year of full time experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last five years
