About the Job

The Assistant General Counsel – Health Care/Transactional directly provides in-house legal services to the administration, staff, and other employees of Beth Israel Lahey Health, Inc. (BILH) and its affiliates.  The Assistant General Counsel represents BILH before courts, administrative review boards and regulatory agencies.  The Assistant General Counsel – Health Care/Transactional will provide advice and counsel in a variety of areas, including general health care law, privacy, health care compliance, corporate and real estate law.  In addition, the Assistant General Counsel – Health Care/Transactional will serve as a general support resource for the other attorneys in the Office of General Counsel. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Directly provide healthcare and corporate related legal services to clients and oversee the allocation of internal and external resources for healthcare and corporate related legal services.

  2. Negotiate and draft contracts and agreements including physician arrangements, vendor agreements, services and supplier agreements.  

  3. Draft board votes and provide general corporate advice and oversight related to the organization’s numerous Boards.  Together with other OGC attorneys, responsible for maintenance and oversight of organization’s internal corporate governance.

  4. Provide internal support to clients for corporate transactional work and oversee the use of external counsel to support more complex corporate transactional work.

  5. Provide internal support to clients for real estate transactional work and oversee the use of external counsel to support real estate transactions.

  6. Advise clients about the impact of recent regulatory and legislative changes and guidance.

  7. Maintain current knowledge of federal and state health care law.

  8. Participate in committees and assist in the development of BILH Health policies and procedures that raise corporate and health law issues.

  9. Support the corporate compliance program and provide legal advice related to compliance matters, including billing compliance, data privacy and security.

  10. Make presentations both inside and outside BILH and conduct teaching sessions for medical and professional staffs and other employees regarding relevant legal issues.

  11. Work directly with outside counsel on issues requiring specialized legal consultation and serve as liaison with outside counsel on referred legal matters.

  12. Participate in the off-hours attorney “call” rotation for providing health care advice connected to medical-legal emergencies.

  13. Perform special projects pertaining to health care and corporate law issues.

  14. Work collaboratively within the BILH legal group to ensure consistent legal delivery of legal services across the system.

  15. Perform other duties as assigned consistent with a lawyer with 5-8 years’ experience in health care and corporate law.


Minimum Qualifications


  • JD from an accredited institution 


  • Admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  Must be a member in good standing.


  • Between 5-8 years of practice as a health care attorney and/or transactional attorney in the health care sector 

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Proven ability to provide legal advice and counsel with minimum oversight.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:    

  • Law firm experience strongly preferred.

Job Location:    

  • Currently, the staff of the OGC is working remotely.  A minimum of part-time in office return to work is anticipated.  Office location is 1135 Tremont Street, Renaissance Center, Boston with need to travel to OGC Burlington office on a regular basis.
