About the Job

Under the direction of the Vice President, Human Resources (Beverly Hospital & Addison Gilbert Hospital) and Director, Human Resources (Anna Jaques Hospital), provides day to day consulting, mediation, facilitation and guidance regarding bargaining unit employment and labor issues, including but not limited to, contract administration, discipline, grievance resolution, collective bargaining, settlements and other labor/employee relations functions.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Provide consulting services to all organizational levels on labor and employee relations, including Vice Presidents, Directors and Managers at both Beverly Hospital, Addison Gilbert Hospital, and Anna Jaques Hospital.

  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of applicable collective bargaining agreements, department policies; administer and interpretation of collective bargaining agreements; advise managers accordingly. 

  • Guide managers/supervisors with matters related to contract compliance and other issues related to supervising union personnel and conflict resolution. 

  • Work with managers/supervisors to collect documentation/data for responding to union information requests and producing reports.

  • Facilitate joint labor management meetings; partner with legal counsel regarding contract negotiations, impact bargaining sessions, arbitrations, and other meetings, take official notes and following up on action items.

  • Establish trusted relationships with all stakeholders, including but not limited to managers, employees, and labor representatives.

  • Mediate labor and employee relations problems by meeting with supervisors and employees to discover the source of the problem and facilitate resolution.

  • Consult with in-house and external legal counsel and, when appropriate, on matters related to equitable treatment of employees and to minimize liability and litigation.

  • Administer the bargaining unit grievance process.

  • Direct and develops strategy to coordinate bargaining unit layoffs, when appropriate, or other reduction in force plans; ensure involved parties receive appropriate guidance, support and information.

  • Handle all day to day responsibilities relating to union grievances and problem-solving, arbitration, contract administration, settlement agreements, letter of understanding and negotiations.  Serves as member of management negotiating team and responsible for significant preparation for the bargaining process.

  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures.

  • Responsible for maintaining satisfactory labor-management relations between management and union.

  • Provide educational courses and materials to supervisors, managers and HR representatives.

  • Perform other duties as requested. 

 

May need to report to work during second or third shifts on occasion in order to address issues that may arise with supervisors and employees who work those shifts.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in HR management, labor relations, or other business-related discipline.  JD preferred.

 

 

Licensure, Certification & Registration:

 

 

Experience:

Minimum of five (5) years’ experience either advising management on the supervision of unionized employees, the labor relations process on behalf of either labor or management, and conduct employee and grievance investigations; ability to conduct grievance meetings, determine relevant facts, analyze facts in relation to contract language/practices, and write clear responses to union contract grievances and information requests; strong organizational and oral and written communication skills; and proficiency with Microsoft Office, Outlook, databases.

  • Content expert in areas of labor relations, collaborative bargaining, alternative dispute resolutions, contract administration, grievance, arbitration and knowledge of similar state laws
  • Strong investigative skills

  • Demonstrated track record of creative leadership in the development and articulation of labor policy and strategy
  • Project management skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills to interact with all levels of employees
