About the Job

JOB SUMMARY:   Contributes to the Hospital’s mission by servicing the needs of the behavioral health patients. Assumes responsibility for providing skilled, creative, high quality care to patients under the direction of an ED Registered nurses. Performs a variety of direct and indirect patient care duties and responsibilities in collaboration with ED Clinical staff. Works effectively and collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary treatment team to enhance the smooth delivery of quality patient care. This  position will have an impact on improving quality and safety by services to patients in the ED. The role includes but it not limited to the use of skilled communication techniques, diversion techniques, collaboration with outside services and face-to-face interaction with patients at the bedside to ensure patient and employee safety.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

Required:  High School Diploma or equivalent

Preferred:  Degree in psychology or related field preferred with theoretical as well as practical knowledge of the clinical area.

Experience

Preferred: Previous related experience.

                  Knowledge of the care of the Behavioral Health Patient/Family unit.

Other Skills/Knowledge

Required:

·        For safety and quality reasons, must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English with patients, visitors and fellow members of the hospital team.

·        Competent in positive and professional interactions with individual patients and families

·        Knowledge of drug and alcohol withdrawal symptoms

·        Effective understanding and application of de-escalation techniques

·        Knowledge of appropriate and safe restraint management processes

·        Demonstrates a positive demeanor that allows for respectful and courteous interaction with all external and internal customers.

·        Works cooperatively and effectively with others with the ability to adapt to changes in the workplace as part of maintaining currency in the profession.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

·        Reports to the Manager/Director of Emergency department

·        Not responsible for supervising the work of others.

 

As part of the emergency department team, this position:

 

·        Maintain a solid understanding of hospital policies and protocols and practices within those policies and procedures

·        Maintain understanding of signs/symptoms of psychiatric diagnosis, including drug/alcohol withdrawal, and apply appropriate therapeutic interventions to mitigate patient escalation

·        Monitor the patient and environment for safety concerns and assist with promoting a positive age-appropriate therapeutic and educational atmosphere.

·        Use approved and appropriate de-escalation techniques and interventions

·        Respond to patient care needs and issues, assist patients with personal hygiene and other activities of daily living.

·        Collaborate with nursing to assist with any patient nursing needs.

·        Assist in transfer process for patients coming into and leaving the ED, ensuring that patient safety is addressed. Monitor and follow the patient belongs process.

·        Act as a role model for other staff

·        Demonstrate knowledge of and respect for patient rights and privacy issues

·        Consistently promote professional working relationships between ED staff, psychiatric clinicians and patient collaterals.

 ·        Participate in any ongoing quality improvement studies that will have positive patient outcomes.

·        Maintain understanding of and follow regulatory agencies’ expectations and guidelines (i.e. DMH, DPH, TJC, payors etc.)

·        Report all observed symptoms, reactions, treatments and changes in the patient’s safety status to the Registered Nurse

·        Maintain annual/biennial requirements of CPR, Risk Management and Restraint Prevention/Intervention

·        Other duties as assigned to meet the general needs of the ED and those we serve.

·        Work with ED staff as appropriate to meet the competing priorities of all patients in the department.  Other duties include transporting patients, stocking rooms, greeting patients,  maintain clean safe ED environment, and other duties as needed.
