About the Job

Beth Israel Lahey Health Behavioral Services is currently searching for a part time Nurse Practitioner to cover the Urgent Psychopharmacology Services. This position will support multiple sites (Salem and Lawrence, MA) and will provide a blend of in person treatment with remote telehealth services.

Part time: 16 hours per week


Basic responsibilities

Provides psychiatric evaluations, ongoing psychiatric assessments and treatments, and counseling to current UPS patients.  Analyzes patient data and test or examination findings in the diagnosis of mental disorders of assigned patients. 


Data acquisition/coordination of treatment

Gathers and maintains patient information and records, including social, medical, and substance use history obtained from the Comprehensive Emergency Services evaluation, and directly from the patients, relatives and significant others, and other sources.  Also collaborates directly with, or instructs others within the UPS to follow up with, physicians, psychotherapists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, or other professionals to obtain client history and to discuss treatment plans and progress.



Develops individualized care plans involving evidence-based psychotherapeutic and/or medication treatments to assigned clients, when indicated.  Monitors patient responses to these treatments (including adverse effects for medications) and makes necessary adjustments or recommendations. Focuses on and screens for patient safety and harm reduction with each patient meeting and with all forms of treatment.  


Qualifications and Education

Must have successfully completed all educational and certification requirements to practice as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) for psychiatric care in the state of Massachusetts.  Must possess and maintain current Massachusetts licensure as an advanced practice registered nurse and current licensures with both the DEA and State of Massachusetts for controlled substances (Buprenorphine licensure not mandatory).

Must possess knowledge of the standard principles and practices of diagnosing and treating (via psychotherapy and psychopharmacology) of mental disorders described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM); also, keeps current with developments in psychiatry via the literature, conferences, Internet, etc.  Motivation to prescribe psychopharmacological medications carefully with the aim of maximizing patient benefit while avoiding/minimizing adverse effects and untoward drug interactions.
