About the Job

Cytotechnologist

Position Summary:  Under the direction of the Cytology Supervisor, performs a variety of tasks associated with the microscopic examination of gynecologic cell samples using the thin prep slide preparation technique.  Examines non-gynecologic specimens including bronchial, biliary tract, and other specimens as well as fine needle aspirations (FNA) from various sites.  Assists with onside slide preparation and specimen preparation for radiologic and non-radiologically guided FNAs.  Assists in cyto-specimen preparations as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: including but not limited to:

 

  • Microscopically examines cells from various body sites to render cytologic diagnoses.
  • Screens GYN and non-GYN slides accurately on a daily basis.
  • Records and files diagnostic data into the Department computer system (EPIC) in accordance with regulatory and departmental guidelines.
  • Assists proceduralists in obtaining fine needle aspiration specimens for cytologic review.
  • Processes FNA specimens, provides results for eventual patient treatment.
  • Assists in cytologic preparation of specimens in the absence of the Cytology Preparation Technician. Processes, stains and coverslips material according to established Departmental guidelines.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.

Licensure, Certification, Registration:  Board Certification C.T. (A.S.C.P.) or eligible.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:  

  • Knowledge of clinical tests and standards necessary to perform complex tests and accurately report result.
  • Analytic ability to perform complex tests, to interpret findings, performs calculations, calibrate instruments, etc.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate clinical testing problems and effect corrective action procedures and modifications.
