About the Job

JOB SUMMARY: Contributes to the Hospital’s mission by planning and implementing safe and developmental classroom curriculum for the children of the Winchester Hospital community.  This educator staff position will have an impact on staff and physician satisfaction by setting their minds at ease, comforted that while they are at work their children are safe and in a nurturing environment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Required:  An Associate’s Degree

Preferred:  An Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in a related field

Experience:

Preferred:  

·        Prior experience working in a licensed child care facility

o   Experience in a full day program.

o   Experience in a National Association Education Young Children (NAEYC) accredited center.

 

Other Skills/Knowledge

Required:

·        For safety and quality reasons, must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English with patients, visitors and fellow members of the hospital team.

·        At least 21 years old and meet the requirements for Department of Early Education and Care (102CMR7: 21(2)(d)).

·        Skills in working with families, conflict resolution and public relations.

·        Good human relations skills to facilitate positive relationships with community agencies, staff, families, and program participants.

·        Possess and utilizes excellent organizational skills.

Preferred:  Familiar with Teaching Strategies Gold Assessment and Planning.  

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS:

Required:

·        Qualified and applied for Certification from the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) and obtained within one month of hire.

·        Current CDA or completion of certification within 1 year of hire.

·        Within the first 60 days of employment, must obtain:

o   Child Abuse Prevention Training

o   Blood Born Pathogen Training

o   Sexual Harassment Training

                                    

LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:  First Aid and CPR certified

POPULATION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:  NA

Professional Commitment Requirements:  Keep abreast of developments in the field and/or licensure through continuing education, participation in professional organizations or a combination of both.

K. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

·        Reports to Child Development Center Administrator

·        Not responsible for supervising the work of others.  May direct the work of others.

As part of the Child Development team, this position:

 

·        Keeps the safety of the children as a first priority. 

o   Emphasizes personal safety and emotional well-being with the children, families and other staff at all times.

o   Continually monitors the children and environment to maximize the safety of all in the center.  Is accountable for all children assigned at all times.

o   Executes infection control protocols.

o   Follows allergy cautions

o   Adheres to other safety and court mandated requirements. 

·        Provides for the care of children in a warm, supportive and engaging environment.

o   Fosters an atmosphere that is family-friendly, age appropriate, and inclusive.

·        Acts as a role model for the children and family members, demonstrating the PROMISE principles, honesty, caring, and healthy choices.  Mentors children in learning and developing these behaviors.   

·        Uses positive and constructive methods of behavior management.

·        Designs age appropriate classroom space and learning stations. 

o   Prepares the classroom for intended curricula and ensures materials are put away and the room is ready for use at the end of the day.

o   Monitors and requests supplies to maintain appropriate supplies and materials to fulfill the needs of the children and/or curriculum. 

o   Puts stock away to ease retrieval and minimize waste. 

·        Maintains a clean and safe work environment to enhance satisfaction and a culture of

safety. 

·        Disinfects space and equipment. 

·        Removes unsafe equipment from use and notifies the director for repairs if appropriate.

·        Shares in regular chore duties for the facility.

·        Plans and implements a well-balanced curriculum of specific, planned learning experiences that support their social, emotional, physical, and cognitive and language development. 

o   Utilizes curricula that is developmentally and linguistically appropriate; provides for development, interest and temperaments of individual children.

o   Incorporates culturally sensitive elements to the curricula. 

o   Recognizes and adjusts for learning and other disabilities without excluding child(ren) from the group.

o   Manages smooth transitions to the next level of development. 

·        Partners with parents, keeping them updated about their children’s development and issues and working together to achieve children’s developmental goals.

o   Together with the family, and child as appropriate, develops individualized developmental and/or learning goals. 

o   Is sensitive to the diverse needs of each family.

o   Writes daily notes summarizing the child’s daily experiences, pertinent issues and/or successes.  When possible, connects with parents. 

o   Writes periodic assessments of each child and shares with family members.

o   Educates parents and children on Center policies, practices and expectations.

·        Communicates effectively with the child development team utilizing established handoffs.  Gives and accepts respectful feedback to enhance teamwork.  Fosters a culture of continuous learning and improvement and quality.  Immediately addresses concerns about safety and concerns about interactions with children directly to the fellow staff member.  Escalates continued concerns to the Director.

·        Functions effectively in a crisis situations. 

         

  • Teachers are responsible to meet all applicable competencies for the age-specific rooms they work in.   

  • Ensures others are operating within their certification and competencies.

·        Preschool:  Support school readiness and educational development.
