About the Job
Statement of Purpose: Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and/or Emergency Physician, the Patient Care Extender supports staff in the care of patients of all ages presenting to the Emergency Department. The Patient Care Extender is primarily responsible for performing a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities as delegated by the nurse upon the order of the Emergency Physician, the Patient Care Extender may perform advanced life support skills permitted within the Paramedic level of certification such as intubation, defibrillation and administration of ACLS resuscitation medications. The Patient Care Extenders must have skills and competencies verified by an Emergency Department Attending.
Job Functions, Tasks, and Responsibilities:
1. Under the direction of the Emergency Department MD, performs the following:
2. Responds to in house emergencies as a member of the MET team and Code team
3. Performs and/or assists the nurse or physician in the performance of direct patient care
a) Performs /assists in the performance of procedures including holding limbs for casting,
hot and cold application, wound cleansing, spinal immobilization, CPR and patient restraint.
b) Collects and records measurements including intake and output, vital signs (including
orthostatic and rectal temperatures), bedside finger stick blood sugar and patient weight as
c) Places patient on cardiac monitor, obtains EKG and applies oxygen as directed

4. Performs and/or assists nurse in the performance of non patient care activities related to the day to day operations of the department.
a) Prepares, stocks and maintains patient rooms with needed supplies and equipment.
Restocks blanket warmer and IV prep area. Washes and changes stretchers between
patients as needed.
b) Monitors and maintains established levels of supplies within the department. Identifies
floor stock inventory needs and notifies nurse of needs.
c) Assists in maintaining equipment including routine equipment preparedness checks. (i.e.
