About the Job

The Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) carries out healthcare tasks in the patient’s home under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The CHHA must maintain confidentiality of patient information, and must submit accurate patient documentation within established time parameters.  The CHHA can perform her duties for private pay clients, as an aide in a Day Program, or for a Certified VNA.



Assisting patients with appropriate techniques to maintain personal hygiene and grooming, including shower, tub or bed baths and mouth, skin, nail and hair care.

  • Assisting patients in the use of toilet facilities, including bed pans and commodes.
  • Assisting patients in and out of bed using safe transfer techniques, including the use of gait belts and mechanical lifting equipment, when applicable.
  • Assisting patients with walking, including the use of walkers, canes and wheelchairs, when applicable.
  • Performing normal range of motion exercises and proper positioning.
  • Assisting with self-administered medications.
  • Assisting with meal preparation and feeding, when identified.
  • Grocery shopping when applicable.
  • Provide transportation needed (if identified on care plan).
  • Observing, reporting and documenting patient status and care provided.
  • Taking and recording of vital signs (temperature, pulse, and respirations) as identified.
  • Practice basic infection control procedures.
  • Documenting status of patient functioning and changes in patient status to be reported to the HHA’s supervisor.
  • Submit accurate documentation and time sheets within established time parameters.
  • Maintaining a clean, safe and healthy environment in the patient’s home including light house-keeping chores (ie; sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, dishes, bathroom cleanup), linen changes and personal laundry as identified on the care plan.
  • Recognizing emergencies and contacting emergency personnel and supervisor when necessary.
  • Understanding the physical, developmental and emotional needs of the populations served. 
  • Maintaining adequate fluid and food intake for clients.
  • Attend at least 12 hours of training annually including mandatory OSHA and HIPAA training.
  • Treating the patient and his/her property with respect.
