About the Job

The Senior Vice President, Ambulatory and Clinical Services (SVP ACS) reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer at LHMC.   Functioning in a management dyad with the Chair of the Department of Medicine and the Chair of the Department of Surgery, the SVP ACS is responsible for the overall executive leadership, management, and oversight of Lahey Hospital and Medical Center’s (LHMC) Clinical Service Lines and Departments of Medicine and Surgery operations and activities across all LHMC sites and community affiliates. The SVP ACS is also responsible for providing executive and strategic oversight of all Ambulatory services under the Lahey Clinic and Lahey Clinic Hospital license

The SVP ACS provides executive leadership to the Departments of Medicine and Surgery and the eight clinical service lines at all of LHMC’s clinical sites (to include all clinic, testing, procedural and inpatient areas).  These activities include annually:

  • $1.1 billion in gross patient services revenue
  • $280 million in direct expenses
  • 620,000 patient to provider visits annually
  • 26,000 discharges
  • 21,300 surgical cases
  • 19,500 endoscopy cases
  • 4,500 cardiac invasive lab cases
  • 2.3 million wRVUs

The departments are comprised of 500 providers, and 900 non provider FTEs.  The SVP ACS directs and integrates the various functions of Medicine and Surgery into the overall organizational strategy and is responsible for overall operations, capital and space planning, financial and resource management, marketing, patient experience, colleague engagement and continuous improvement in collaboration with the team. The SVP ACS is responsible for developing concepts for new and improved services, programs, policies, and procedures as well as serves as an advisor and consultant on improving and maintaining established programs and services. The SVP ACS is responsible for the management of the physical environment, including management of space and capital planning for renovation, construction and equipment.   The SVP ACS ensures that operations are aligned with LHMC’s and BILH’s mission, strategic objectives, and the integrated group practice model.

In collaboration with the CMO, CNO and department leadership and other cross-functional leaders from IT and Revenue Cycle, the SVP ACS sets the strategic direction for ambulatory operations, as well as ensures the effective and efficient operations in this area, with a focus on optimizing patient access, capacity utilization and increasing value-based care.  Responsible for driving growth and expansion of services, monitors and improves access to services and is accountable for achieving the established goals and outcomes.   Oversees annual ambulatory strategic and operational planning and is accountable for achieving the established goals and outcomes.

The SVP ACS is a key member of senior leadership at LHMC and assumes an active leadership role with the medical staff management, other clinical leaders in the hospital and clinic decision-making structure, and partners closely with the SVP for Hospital Specialties and Pharmacy and the CNO/SVP for Infrastructure and Support Services.  Works with direct reports to meet organizational financial goals, and implements mid-course adjustments as needed based on changes in volume, reimbursement expectations or other healthcare environment or economic changes.  Responsible for the strategic direction and daily operations of the organizations eight Clinical Service Lines.

Qualifications

Education: Master’s degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Public Health or other relevant field.

Licensure, Certification, Registration:  None

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Advanced interpersonal skills coupled with excellent presentation and communication skills essential for effectively managing Ambulatory and Clinical Service Line operations with tact while representing Lahey Hospital and Medical Center internally and externally.  Advanced analytical skills necessary to integrate and interpret data from diverse sources in order to determine optimal course of action.  Aptitude in the financial and business functions of healthcare management. Advanced knowledge of the health care delivery system including regulations, trends, policies and procedures. Ability to build consensus, influence outcomes and lead toward common objectives. Key leadership traits like integrity, executive presence and the ability to harbor trust are essential.

Experience:     15 years of operational leadership in a healthcare setting characterized by progressively expanding scope and responsibility, to include at least 5 years in a high-volume hospital and/or clinic setting. Demonstrated success leading initiatives that have significant impact across the organization.
