About the Job
The clinical nutrition department is an integral part of the patient care team at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center. The employees skilled Registered Dietitians (RD) competent in all aspects of nutrition care. The RDs support the complex population of our hospital including ICU patients, long-term enteral & TPN patients, liver, kidney, and autologous stem cell transplant patients, as well as acutely and chronically ill med/surg. patients. Inpatient and outpatient staff work together to improve transitions of care and patient outcomes. The RDs coordinate care, attend rounds, provide in-services to colleagues, precept interns, and sit on hospital committees dedicated to breaking down the silos in healthcare. RDs can apply for appointment to the Allied Health Professional Staff to obtain order-writing privileges and order diets for patients. Nestled within the Food & Nutrition Services Department, the RDs communicate with their food service colleagues regarding patient preferences and interventions. RDs provide quality improvement projects including adopting the AND/ASPEN guidelines for malnutrition and creating systems to capture the malnutrition diagnosis more efficiently by leveraging our EMR. Increasing competency in clinical skills is of great importance. The RDs are trained in nutrition focused physical exams, and are supported in their efforts to obtain specialist and advanced practice credentials. This talented department boasts multiple Certified Nutrition Support Clinicians on staff as well as Board Certified Specialists in Oncology Nutrition, a Certified Diabetes Educator, and 2 Registered Dietitians who have achieved the Advanced Practitioner Certification in Clinical Nutrition. The Clinical Nutrition Department is dedicated to building a diverse and specialized team where entry-level and experienced staff alike are supported and encouraged in their career goals for the benefit of our patients
Under the general supervision of the Clinical Manager, the Dietitian Specialist in Nutrition Support assesses the nutritional status and plans nutritional intervention and care for patients in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and all hospitalized patients receiving total parenteral nutrition. Provides care to critically ill patients. Instructs dietitians, students, resident fellows and nursing staff on principles of nutrition support; acts as a liaison with home care companies. Develops and promotes collaborative practice and collegial relationships with physicians and other disciplines as a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
Education: BS in Nutrition Science, Nutrition Education, or related degree.
Licensure, Certification, Registration: Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, and
certification as a Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC) with the American Society of Parental and Enteral Nutrition
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Knowledge and facility with the body of knowledge supporting clinical field. In the
absence of any of the identified skills, must demonstrate the ability to be trained in order to meet organizational standards.
Experience: 2 years of recent clinical experience in an acute care setting providing care to adult and geriatric patients
with a portion of that time spent in delivering nutrition support.
