Registered Nurse(RN) - Special Care Nursery

Position Summary:

In this role, you will assume responsibility to lead our team in providing quality patient care. You will assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care from admission to discharge and you will be responsible to direct, assign and supervise ancillary staff team members in providing the appropriate level of care in the most efficient manner. You will also act as a role model to staff members.
The Maternal Newborn Service at Beverly Hospital provides the full scope of
perinatal care including prenatal evaluation of mother and fetus, intrapartum
care for labor and birth, intraoperative and recovery care for an operative
delivery, postpartum care, newborn care for well babies and special care for
premature and high risk newborns. The department includes labor and delivery,
postpartum, newborn nursery, a level IIB special care nursery, a perinatology
clinic in collaboration with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the North
Shore Birth Center, a parent education department and a lactation consultation service


The Special Care Nursery (SCN) is a twelve-bed level IIB unit that provides care
for high risk newborns who were born prematurely or with medical complications.
Patients in the SCN include both infants born at Beverly Hospital and transfers in
following treatment at tertiary care facilities. The SCN Registered Nurses and
Board Certified Neonatologists provide care for infants 32 weeks gestation or
greater who require the following clinical care: frequent observation; cardiorespiratory
monitoring; oxygen therapy; intravenous hydration and medications;
gavage feedings blood transfusions and/or exchange transfusions. As a Level IIB
nursery, the SCN can care for infants who require respiratory support including
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). Special procedures include lumbar
puncture, umbilical vessel catheterization, endotracheal intubation, mechanical
ventilation, chest tube insertion, and emergency resuscitation. Infants requiring
intubation and mechanical ventilation, emergent neonatal surgery, or pediatric
subspecialty consultation not available at Beverly Hospital are transferred to a
tertiary care center after stabilization.
Common Neonatal Diagnoses - Hypoglycemia - Hyperbilirubinemia - Sepsis - Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome - Prematurity - Respiratory distress - TTN
Based on their training and demonstrated competencies, nurses are assigned to Labor and Delivery, Postpartum/Nursery or Special Care Nursery. Staffing is based on volume, acuity and specific patient care needs following the registered nurse to patient ratio recommendations published by the Association for Womens Health and Neonatal Nursing (AWHONN) and in The Guidelines for Perinatal Care by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists


Required: 3+ years IIB SCN, Level III NICU experience. NRP certification. BLS certification. Current experience in critical neonatal deliveries and stabilization. Current MA Nursing Licensure. Cross train to newborn nursery and mother-baby couplet care within 6 months of hire. Per diem contract level 2-4

Preferred: BSN, S.T.A.B.L.E. certification CLC or IBCLC

Per diem, hours assigned as needed. 12 hour shifts.
