The Maternal Newborn Service at Beverly Hospital provides the full scope of perinatal care including prenatal evaluation of mother and fetus, intrapartum care for labor and birth, intraoperative and recovery care for Cesarean Births, mother baby couplet care for postpartum and newborn patients and special care for premature and high risk newborns. The department includes Labor and Delivery, Mother Baby unit, and a level IIB Special Care Nursery. Beverly Hospital also has a free standing birth center on campus staffed by Certified Nurse Midwives who provide prenatal and well woman gynecological care and assist in out-of-hospital births. Additionally we have an inpatient and outpatient lactation service, a parent education department and an on-site perinatology clinic in collaboration with our tertiary care partners.

The Mother Baby Unit consists of:
17 private rooms
two semi-private rooms
two 14-bassinet nurseries.
Patients on the Mother Baby Unit include:
antepartum patients hospitalized with complications of pregnancy
postpartum patients following vaginal or cesarean birth
and newborns born at greater than 35 weeks gestation.
Utilizing a mother-baby care model, nurses focus on initial and ongoing assessment, closely monitoring and supporting the newborns transition to extrauterine life; assessment of the involution process and monitoring for complications in the postpartum period; initiation of breastfeeding; and patient/family education. Procedures performed include circumcision, phlebotomy, car seat testing, newborn hearing screening, and phototherapy.

A Nurse Manager is appointed for each of the three clinical units, Labor and Delivery, Mother Baby Unit and Special Care Nursery. The Nurse Manager has 24 hour accountability for the daily operations, staffing and patient care in the department, and is responsible for maintaining evidence based practice and supporting staff development.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Baccalaureate required in nursing or other related health care field.
Masters degree preferred.
Minimum of 5 years experience in the field of practice.
Recent perinatal experience required. Must have demonstrated leadership skills.

Current Massachusetts license as RN.
BLS & NRP required.
