Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Position Summary:

The Vice President, Operations (COO) reports to the President and CEO of Northeast Hospitals. The COO ensures the consistent and well coordinated delivery of quality patient care consistent with the organization?s mission and priorities. The COO plans, prioritizes, recommends policy, and oversees the development and execution of operating and service standards and operating budgets. Plans, organizes, directs and supervises activities related to scope of responsibility at Beverly Hospital, Addison Gilbert Hospital, Lahey Outpatient Center, Danvers, Bayridge Hospital and Physician Services. The COO oversees the administration and operations of hospital based physician services, including setting service standards, budgets, evaluating performance and negotiating contracts. The COO also is instrumental in recommending and implementing performance improvement efforts throughout the organization, in conjunction and cooperation with other leaders.

The COO chairs the Acute Care Operations Committee which reviews and approves the allocation of personnel, capital and expenses.

Responsibilities

Develops vision and provides direction for delivering high quality, cost effective and patient centered care.
In collaboration with the Medical Staff, identifies, formulates and implements System-approved initiatives to maintain high quality, community care.
Develops and leads a team of skilled professionals to ensure competency, enthusiasm and job satisfaction for the workforce.
Sets priorities and develops a culture within the workforce consistent with the mission, vision and values of the organization.
Ensures a positive professional environment for the Medical Staff.
Ensures that the President and CEO, Boards of Trustees and Medical Executive Committee are properly briefed regarding hospital operations.
Along with the other members of senior leadership, develops and recommends to the Board of Trustees an annual operating and capital budget that ensures cost-effective, high quality, patient-centered care that is constantly evolving and consistent with the needs of the community.
Ensures that the organization effectively and appropriately operates within the approved operating and capital budgets. Ensures adequate resources. Adjusts priorities throughout the fiscal year as market, regulatory or internal conditions warrant.
Establishes, plans, and sets expectations and manages in such a way as to measure, assess and improve the performance of management, clinical and support processes.
Assists direct reports in constantly improving quality, service and efficiency within areas of responsibility.
Ensures that Medical Staff concerns are expeditiously addressed within the appropriate area of responsibility.
Negotiates physician contracts for those physician groups that provide hospital services (Emergency Department, Radiology, Anesthesia, Hospitalists, etc.). Manages those relationships to ensure optimal performance.
Ensures that the employed physician network operates effectively; ensuring high quality access to care within regulatory standards, and consistent with organizational objectives.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelors in Business, Healthcare or a related field.
A graduate degree in hospital administration, business administration or a related field is preferred.
Certificate in Lean Six Sigma, or other performance improvement disciplines is preferred.

Experience:

A minimum of 8-10 years of progressive and significant leadership experience in a complex healthcare delivery organization. Top leadership in a mature managed care market with a proven ability to function effectively within such a market.
Experience in successfully implementing operations improvement in Hospitals or for hospital services.
Experience with managing physician services, either hospital-based or community-based is preferred.

Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of state, local and federal laws and regulations governing the operation of facilities and provision of services.
Experience implementing strategic initiatives to promote system development with potential partners in both the community and medical staff relations.
Proven track record of the ability to recognize and respond to needs and opportunities in the market place.
Excellent problem solving skills with the orientation and the capability of analyzing complex situations using data and responds in a thorough and expeditious manner.
A demonstrated understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with healthcare delivery. Must possess communication skills, credibility and track record to educate others regarding these opportunities.
A record of effective and collaborative working relationships with peers, and physicians, both private practice and employed. Experience working in a system or complex healthcare environment.
Experience in an environment that supports a creative approach to management and an understanding of the big picture.
Ability to build relationships and collaborate with a variety of constituents in a manner that reflects respect and confidence.
Experience in management techniques, financial management, planning and clinical operations.
Demonstrates ability to delegate authority and accountability.
Demonstrates a commitment to open dialogue across all levels of the organization.
Demonstrates ability to mentor and develop leadership and clinical skills in others.

Scheduled Hours

Full time, exempt position for Beverly and Addison Gilbert Hospitals.
