Directs and manages full scope of Midwifery Services at NSBC in alignment with strategic mission and goals of the organization. Responsible for maintaining collaborative relationships with consulting physicians, OB Medical Director and Maternal Newborn Services at Beverly Hospital. Manages resources including budget preparation, variance monitoring and allocation of resources. Maintains current application of all policies and procedures for NSBC. Responsible for management of human resources. In addition, provides full scope OB/GYN services for healthy women of all ages who meet the criteria for acceptance to Nurse Midwifery care. Maintains active participation in professional organizations.
This leadership position is for a Certified Nurse Midwife with leadership skills to manage a birth center based midwifery practice. The group provides outpatient OB GYN care, birth center births and hospital births. This is primarily a management position that includes some direct patient care.
Provides overall management for the North Shore Birth Center
Designs and implements structures, systems, and standards for improved patient care
Collaborates with midwifery, medical, and nursing staff to ensure appropriate quality care and management is provided through a cooperative effort between all disciplines
Coordinates and problem solves to ensure a seamless integration of services across the continuum of care.
Provides leadership for clinical practice and patient care delivery
Develops mechanisms to assess patients? and families? response to care, validating that care provided to patients is consistent with treatment plan, clinical guidelines, and is responsive to patient and family expectations.
Supports and helps implement evidenced-based practice in areas of responsibility
Designs and implements structures, systems, and standards for improved patient care delivery
Facilitates multidisciplinary care to ensure the best possible outcome for patients
Collaborates with medical and nursing staff to ensure appropriate quality care and management is provided through a cooperative effort between nurse midwives, physicians and nurses.
Manages human, fiscal and other resources
Ensures the effective and appropriate utilization of resources to ensure quality, safe, and effective patient care
Interviews and recommends candidates for hiring, promoting, transferring and terminating
Identifies and implements strategies to improve employee clinical and behavioral skills
Plans, directs and participates in employee orientation and professional development programs for staff
Completes annual performance appraisals prior to the due date
Monitors staff turnover and develops and implements retention strategies to reduce turnover
Participates in the development of annual budgets and business plans as necessary
Monitors financial performance, expenses and revenues, and plans and implements timely action steps to correct budget variances
Utilizes financial management tools and appropriately seeks assistance from the Finance Department for analysis.
Implements revenue enhancement and expense reduction strategies as appropriate
Creatively works to achieve measurable, positive outcomes in the department through design and implementation of effective teams or workgroups
Ensures compliance with professional, accreditation and regulatory standards
Is current regarding standards of care established by the profession, regulatory and accreditation bodies, and hospital and is able to implement for area of responsibility
Ensures that clinical practice is consistent with current standards, regulations, regulatory and accreditation bodies, and hospital policy and procedures
Ensures that clinical practice is compliant with accreditation standards, governmental standards and regulations, and law.
Establishes systems to monitor compliance with accreditation standards, governmental standards and regulations, and law.
Registered Nurse in Massachusetts
Completion of an accredited Nurse Midwifery program
Masters degree required
Three to five years current clinical experience as a Certified Nurse Midwife
Prescriptive licensure under Massachusetts Department of Public Health and federal DEA
Current BLS and NRP
Demonstrated leadership skills required.

The Birth Center was founded in 1980 to provide an alternative for families who were seeking a more home like and intimate birth experience. Since 1980 over 5000 families have received prenatal care and given birth there. Services provided are, physical exams, newborn care, circumcisions, childbirth and labor management at the birth center or at Beverly Hospital, immediate post partum recovery, nutritional counseling, contraceptive counseling, and well woman gynecology care.
A staff CNM is available 24 hours a day by answering service and beeper. The staff consists of 5.2 FTE?s certified nurse midwives, managed by a CNM Director. Also on staff are an Office manager and 2 part time secretaries. The North Shore Birth Center has a Medical Director and other physician OB/GYN consultants.
The Birth Center serves basically three distinct populations: 1. The childbearing population which consists of well women ages 15 to 45 years from all economic backgrounds, who are experiencing normal pregnancies. The well woman gynecology population consists of essentially normal women ages 13-80 years who are experiencing a minor GYN problem, seeking an annual physical exam and pap test. Also in this population are those seeking family planning counseling and these are provided with an appropriate method and contraception.
Newborns: The Birth Center provides immediate newborn management which includes, stabilization after birth, newborn assessment, routine labs if necessary, and introduction to breast feeding, administration of newborn medications, circumcision if desired and discharge exams. The staff continues to assess the mother-baby and dad through the first six weeks postpartum
The North Shore Birth Center is located on the campus of Beverly Hospital. The building, formerly the home of the hospital administrator, maintains many of its homelike amenities. The facility consists of a large living area, which serves as a family room for laboring families, and a waiting area for prenatal visits, a kitchen, two birth rooms, with private baths. The office area consists of four exam rooms, a reception area, two bathrooms, clean and dirty utility rooms, and storage closet.
This is a 40 hour exempt position.
